Cultural travel program in Algeria with Algeria DMC
Day 1 :Algiers - Djanet

Arrival in Algiers, transfer to the domestic airport for the flight: Algiers 22:45 / Djanet 00:40. Welcomed by our Tuareg team and transferred to the camp. Overnight bivouac.

Day 2 : Crossing the Erg Admer to reach Tegharghart

We begin our journey amidst the vastness and majestic beauty of the desert dunes at the heart of one of the Sahara’s largest massifs, the Erg Admer. We arrive at the Tegharghart site to contemplate one of the most emblematic rock engravings of the Tassili n’Ajjer: « The Crying Cow, » dated at over 7,000 years old. Both the Tuaregs and scientists consider this engraving a masterpiece of Neolithic sculpture due to its craftsmanship, realism, and the emotion it conveys. Overnight bivouac.

Day 3 : Discovery of the Iherir Oasis

We travel through the golden dunes towards a hidden gem within the desert’s immensity. Like a welcoming mirage, the Iherir oasis comes into view, a haven of life in the middle of the desert. We explore this valley, the only true water source in the region, which is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and at Man and the Biosphere Reserve. The Iherir Valley features exceptional landscapes with wadis (dry riverbeds) and gueltas (natural pools) that create a lush tapestry of greenery. Overnight stay in a gite.

Day 4 : Trekking to Essendilène Canyon and its Emerald Guelta

A hike among the oleanders of the Essendilène Canyon awaits us for a unique sensory experience, where nature displays its charm through a palette of vibrant colors and the intoxicating scent of these flowering shrubs. The trail opens before us through tunnels of oleanders, creating enchanting alcoves where time seems to stand still. On the horizon, the rock walls rise and narrow to form an impressive canyon leading to the emerald guelta (natural pool). Around a dusty bend, a nomadic village emerges. Traditional tents, woven from natural fibers, stand humbly beneath the vast sky. We take time to stop in this village for a genuine moment of sharing with the Tuareg women and children. Overnight bivouac.

Day 5 : Tikoubaouine, Rock Formations and Cave Paintings

Journeying across varied landscapes into the unknown that stretches before us, we discover Tikoubaouine, an emblematic site of the Tassili n’Ajjer. A sandstone arch shaped like an elephant stands before our eyes, a work of art sculpted by millennia of erosion. The surrounding rock formations take on fascinating shapes, like sculptures crafted by an invisible artist. Amidst the rolling dunes, we discover a pre-Islamic tomb, a sanctuary from the past that offers us a journey through time. Throughout our trip, we contemplate shelter after shelter, multiple rock paintings that bring us to the Neolithic period, connecting us to prehistoric artists and their stories painted on the walls. Hunting, wild animals, and glimpses of life scenes transport us into the mysterious world of those who once lived on these lands. Overnight bivouac.

Day 6 : Visit of Djanet

We continue our circuit towards Tifartasen and take the road to Djanet, the cradle of Tuareg culture. We visit the old town and the local market, where Tuareg craftsmanship comes to life. Shimmering fabrics, jewelry, and handcrafted objects evoke the rich cultural heritage of the region and testify to Tuareg art and expertise. Check-in at a gite for a refreshing shower and dinner.

Day 7 : Djanet – Algiers

Transfer to Djanet Airport. Flight at 10:10 AM, arriving in Algiers at 12:25 PM. Followed by transfer to the international airport for the return flight.

Highlights of this Cultural Tour of Tassili N’Ajjer:

This tour will also take you to the Sahara Desert, which covers Algeria’s territory.
Far from being monotonous, you’ll witness an incredible spectrum of desert colors, ranging from yellow to almost red. The landscapes vary dramatically, encompassing volcanic and lunar terrains (the Tassili N’Ajjer), stony plains (the Regs), and sandy plains (the Ergs) from which magnificent oases occasionally emerge.
This specific tour, « North Tassili N’Ajjer, » will introduce you to southeastern Algeria’s Tassili n’Ajjer, a vast sandstone plateau reaching over altitude. Here, you’ll explore a labyrinth of canyons and rock formations sculpted by erosion—a landscape the writer Roger Frison-Roche famously described as « forests of stone. » It is a truly spectacular setting that concentrates the Sahara’s most striking natural beauty.
