The Algerian Sahara

Discover the mythical places of the Algerian capital and its spectacular desserts from Tamanrasset to Djanet, with its rock carvings, dunes, sandstone cliffs and impressive landscapes.

Program
Day 1 Monday : Algiers

Assistance & transfer to the hotel.
With a stop on the heights of the city to discover Makam Echahid.
Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 Tuesday : Algiers

Visit of the Casbah and meeting with a Cabinetmaker.  
Lunch in the district of the fishery, where stands the New Mosque (Djamâa el-djedid).
Afther that visit of the Grande Poste, the national theater, the Wilaya (the prefecture of Algiers) and the Galeries de France.
Final visit of the day will be the Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Afrique

 

Day 3 Wednesday : Flight Algiers / Tamanrasset

Flight from the Algiers to Tamanrasset.
Departure towards the Assekrem refuge, through the Atakor massif with prestigious reliefs.
Lunch.
Visit the magnificent site where Charles de Foucauld lived.
Dinner and overnight stay near his hermitage.

Day 4 Thursday : Hirafok - Atakor - Oued Tellouet

Departure towards Hirafok, a Tuareg village on the edge of the Atakor massif.
Continuation with Ideles, to appreciate the gardens.
Bivouac a little further, at the foot of a small black basalt cliff.

Day 5 Friday : Tellouhet - Afara - Amadror - Tihodaine – Afara

Direction Afara, a vast sandy plain, at the foot of Tassili N’Ajjer.
Then we will cross the great plain of Amadror to the wonderful erg of Tihodaine, a tangle of dunes strewn with Neolithic remains.
From Tihodaine to Afara, along the cliff of Tassili N’Ajjer, through wadis and rocks to beautiful sand dunes to settle the camp for the night.

Day 6 Saturday : Akba - Tamedet - Tassili N'Ajjer - Tasset - Dider - Assar

Via the Akba de Tamedet, direction the Tassili cliff to the wonderful site of Tasset.
Continuation to
Dider, a vast plateau where it’s possible to admire the impressive gueltas of Assar and engravings which are among the most beautiful in the Sahara.
Bivouac.

Day 7 Sunday : Akba Pass - Tin Teradjeli - Erg Admer – Djanet

Early in the morning, passing by the impressive akba of Tin Teradjeli to reach the plain of Admer, a vast sandy area between the cliff of the plateau and the high dunes of the Erg Admer.
Arrival in the evening in Djanet to spend the night in the guest house.

Day 8 Monday : Tadrart massif - Oued El Beridj

From Djanet, towards the Tadrart massif, frequented throughout the Neolithic period. 
We will explore the region of El Beridj, made up of large canyons bordered by dark sandstone cliffs where we have the opportunity to admire our first rock carvings.
Dinner and overnight stay in a bivouac in the Oued El Beridj.

Day 9 Tuesday: Moul N’Aga

Hike and drive in this picturesque universe. Crossing immense creeks carved out of enormous caves and dotted with impressive arcades.
The sand has seeped into the side of the cliff, shades of red and ocher. Along the way discovery of new paintings, mainly from the
Bovidian era: great hunters armed with spears, surrounded by their dogs, pursuing a sheep with heavy horns. 
Bivouac and overnight 

 

Day 10 Wednesday: In Djaren Canyon - Tin Merzouga

Departure to the immense In Djaren canyon. Its cliffs, sculpted by erosion, are home to numerous frescoes and rock engravings: elephants, giraffes, bovines of various kinds.
Continuation to the pearl of Tadrart:
Tin Merzouga. Culminating at 1,300 meters in height with its saffron and red dunes which light up at sunset. 
Bivouac in Tin Merzouga.

Day 11 Thursday: L’Oued In Djaren - Tamezguida Cathedral

Today we will go to the wadi In Djaren and its vegetation (acacias, roses of Jericho, henbane which grew during the last flood) until reaching the cathedral of Tamezguida and its immense arches.
Also in the In Djaren canyon, visit of rock engravings and paintings including fish on the walls of the Tadrart and the only seated giraffe of all the Tassilis.
Bivouac.

Day 12 Friday: Tegharghart - Djanet

After breakfast visit of Tegharghart engravings of the crying cow, then going back to the town of Djanet.
Afternoon city tour in Djanet, walking and seeing crafts.

Day 13 Saturday: Return flight

Transfer to airport assistance and return flight from Djanet to Algiers.
International airport transfer and return flight.

With landscapes between volcanic (Hoggar massif) and lunar (Tassili N’Ajjer), stone plains and (the Regs) and sandy plains (the Ergs) from which sometimes spring superb oasis.
