Long overshadowed on the global tourism stage, Algeria is now setting ambitious goals to establish itself as a must-visit destination. With its exceptional heritage and stunningly diverse landscapes, the country is investing heavily in developing its tourism industry. This bold strategy could redefine Mediterranean tourism in the coming years.
An Invaluable Heritage at the Heart of Tourism Development
Algeria is home to a wealth of natural and historical treasures, making it a unique destination. The Tassili n’Ajjer, recently highlighted by National Geographic, preserves one of the world’s largest collections of prehistoric rock art. The ancient Roman cities of Timgad and Djemila, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, stand as remarkable rivals to Europe’s most famous ruins. Meanwhile, Algeria’s coastline boasts pristine, unspoiled beaches, far from the crowded mass tourism hubs.
Recognizing this immense potential, the Algerian government is implementing an ambitious strategy to showcase these assets. Initiatives include modernizing airport infrastructure, expanding road networks, and developing new hotel facilities. Economic incentives, such as tax reductions and streamlined administrative processes, further encourage private investment.
By 2030, Algeria aims to create 30,000 new hotel rooms, with 40% financed by international investors. This expansion is expected to generate nearly 200,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
A Diversification Strategy to Attract International Visitors
Algeria is diversifying its tourism markets to appeal to a broader range of visitors. A notable example of this initiative is the recent arrival of a delegation of 50 Chinese tourists as part of a bilateral partnership. With 155 million international travelers in 2023, China represents a major opportunity. Algeria has set an ambitious goal: to attract 500,000 Chinese visitors annually by 2030.
To achieve this, the country is taking additional steps, including training Chinese-speaking tour guides, adapting hotel facilities, and introducing dedicated services. The launch of an e-visa system in June 2025, a project involving a €12 million investment, will significantly ease entry into the country. This measure is expected to generate €150 million in annual revenue from visa fees alone.
A Positive Economic Impact Nationwide
Tourism development benefits not only the hospitality sector but also the broader Algerian economy. Local craftsmanship has seen a 25% increase in revenue since 2022, while infrastructure expansion boosts the construction industry. Additionally, growing demand for local products is driving growth in agriculture and the agri-food sector.
With its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Algeria has all the assets to become a leading Mediterranean tourism destination. However, to turn this potential into lasting success, continued investment in infrastructure, diversification of tourism offerings, and stronger international promotion are essential.
If these efforts come to fruition, Algeria could soon establish itself as a prime destination in the Mediterranean, attracting travelers seeking authenticity, preserved nature, and extraordinary cultural discoveries.
